About our Hillclimb

Before the Stonethrowers Rally or Veteran Run the Dungarvan Hill Climb was the most important event in the clubs calendar. The hill was regarded by many experts to have all the ingredients, right and left hand sweeps and hairpins to make it the most exacting test of this nature forman and machine in these islands.

Mr. R. Gallagher's (Dublin) well-known Leprechaun (995 c.c) which won Class C (up to 1,250 c.c) in the Open Hill Climb sponsored by the Tipperary L. C. and M. C. Club at Dungarvan recently. The Leprechaun covered the hill climb, a distance of 1.7 miles in 1.4235 seconds

While every precaution is taken by the organisers to ensure the safety of competitors and spectators, motor sport can be dangerous. Accidents can happen and down the years the Tipperary Club had its share of spills. Thankfully except for one fatal accident serious injury was avoided. The fatal accident occurred in 1959 when Billy Telford lost his life on the Dungarvan Sweep. We remember him today. May he rest in peace.
